Pool Tables and pool cloth
In learning to play pool you want to learn as much as you can about every aspect of the game. One of the things you can learn is about the different billiard tables that are used, and also the different cloths that the table can be covered in.
Most pool tables are rectangle and are in fact two times the length as the width. You have either 7’, 8’, or even 9’ tables. While if you are playing on a snooker table it is 12’ in length. Most of the pool halls you can go to will have a 9 footer. While a pub which is frequented by the less advanced players will have a 7 footer and most of the time it will be coin operated to play a game. There was a time when a 10’ table was common, but that was back in the 1800s. The only time 10 footers are used now are in carom billiards.
The bed of your pool table is mostly made of slate; this will prevent any warping due to humidity. While a smaller table that might be in a bar may only be made of a small piece of slate. Most tables have six pockets.
Tables are covered with a wool and nylon blend that is named baize. A common name called by most pool players is the “felt”. The quality of the cloth will cause a slower or faster roll, and depending on where the table is it will depend on if they are using a better quality of cloth or not. Most of the time the color of the felt is of course green.
Now that you know a bit more about tables and the cloth that billiards tables are made from you can go practice some combo shots!
